The only fabrics healthful to wear are the natural ones – cotton, hemp, linen, silk and wool. As reported in Clinical Ecology, Vol 4, No 2, 1986, A. Rashid Seyal, MD, and others observed 4000 subjects, 2000 wearing synthetic, 2000 wearing cotton next to their skin. Systolic blood pressure and heart rate were significantly higher in those wearing synthetics, and premature ventricular contractions were significantly more frequent. Synthetic fabrics are made with many dangerous, caustic substances, which have not been properly tested. Some of these chemicals interact with enzymes in the skin and are absorbed, then stored in the liver. Synthetics are particularly dangerous when worn by children, especially infants. It’s an effort to avoid chemical fabrics, but it pays off, especially in hot weather when cottons are cool and allow your skin to breathe. Crinkle cotton is great because you don’t have to iron it.
