Please don’t be taken in by the fructose fans. It’s easy to be led astray because people tend to associate fructose with fruit. HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) is everywhere; Americans consume more of this sweetener than sugar, and Australians have a tendency to embrace America’s bad habits. This additive is, unfortunately, a favourite ingredient in ‘health foods’.
According to Ms Forristal, a team of investigators at the USDA, led by Dr Meira Field, compared the effects of glucose and fructose, using rats. They found that the glucose group was unaffected, but the fructose group had horrible results – their bodies fell apart! Dr William Campbell Douglass, in Second Opinion, says that HFCS significantly raises triglyceride levels, which is known to increase the risk of heart disease. And they push this stuff for diabetics and our children! What can we do about this incredible mess civilised people have gotten into? Kicking the sugar habit is a start, of course. This is, unfortunately, a lot easier said than done, because refined sugar is highly addictive, as are smoking, alcohol, aspartame, coffee and many drugs. But kick it we must, if we are to be healthy and live out our expected lifespan with our teeth, brains and organs intact, and with a vibrant feeling of health. Yes, that is possible!
